Strings in Schools was founded in 2003 by Madge Ebright under the auspices of the Paradise Symphony Orchestra. Carla Shryock became the Program Director in August, 2010. Carla has been a Suzuki violin teacher since 1995 and taught group classes in Modesto, CA for 12 years prior to moving to Paradise. By implementing the Suzuki method into the schools, Strings in Schools is able to offer violin to children beginning in Kindergarten.
Strings in Schools was started to give every child the opportunity to learn a stringed instrument if they had a desire. Students typically do not meet with a private teacher, but meet in a group class of 4-10 students twice a week. Once the students become more advanced, they can audition to join the Beginning String Ensemble class and from there, they can audition for the Paradise Youth Symphony Orchestra. Strings in Schools holds 2 concerts per year - one in the winter and one in spring. Students are available to perform for groups, organizations, nursing homes and some community events.
